The Regional Council chairs the Atlantic Arc
7 07 2009
Since the 13th of June 2008, the Lower Normandy Regional Council has been presiding over the Atlantic Arc Commission.
Among the many European programmes, the Atlantic Arc Commission is one of the 6 geographical commissions comprising the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR ), the aim of which is to boost recognition within its territorial boundaries “To a greater extent than other European regions, those within the Atlantic Arc need voluntarist policies to ensure that they adapt to globalisation, given their specific economic characteristics and the insufficient accessibility of their territories. Such Atlantic mobilisation is therefore perfectly in line with ongoing project logics in Lower Normandy, which aim at helping us to adapt to today’s challenges,” highlighted Laurent Beauvais, during the commission’s annual general meeting in Deauville in June 2008.
The Atlantic Arc Commission reunites a total of 27 regions, from Andalusia to Scotland, that have been cooperating since 1989. The Commission is particularly active in obtaining European funding for its members, hence facilitating their integration within European priorities. Throughout its mandate, Lower Normandy is consequently planning to focus the Commission’s work and action on three priorities: governance, territoriality and maritimity. And the Commission is, of course, keeping a watchful eye on INTERREG programmes, in particular the IV B Atlantic Area (read opposite).
