As healthy as an apple
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. There’s a slogan that Val-de-Vire Bioactives could well adopt. For the company concentrates and purifies ingredients and organic molecules extracted from cider apples, the beneficial properties of which are renowned.

“We extract polyphenols and fibres from fruit to transform them into food ingredients or to enrich food supplements, and to use them in foodstuffs such as fruit puree, yoghurt, fruit juice…”, explains Philippe Sanoner, VDV Bioactives’ R&D and quality manager. Cider apples are renowned for their high fibre and antioxidant content.
There are over 600 varieties and as many different polyphenols. A genuine opportunity for the industry which has been under pressure since the gradual decrease in alcoholic beverage sales.
Val-de-Vire Bioactive is a totally affiliated member of the agricultural cooperative, Elle et Vire. The latter has even funded research work conducted in partnership with the INRA. The Manche Departmental Council and the Lower Normandy Regional Council have also provided support. Today, Bioactive is pursuing its collaboration with the INRA, working in particular on improving taste and food processing.
Val-de-Vire Bioactives is the only company to have seized the cider apple market and is currently developing its export potential. “European regulations on nutrition and health claims are very strict and require substantial financial efforts,” explains Philippe Sanoner. On the contrary, the United States, Japan and other Asian countries are particularly partial to functional foods and other products with improved fibre content and phytonutrients.
