Two laboratories reunited for improved efficiency and exposure.

The CIMAP1 - Centre de recherche sur les Ions, les Matériaux et la Photonique (Centre for Research on Ions, Materials and Photonics), created in January 2008, is the result of the amalgamation of the CIRIL - Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche avec les Ions Lourds (Interdisciplinary Centre for Laser Ion Research) and the SIFCOM - Structure des Interfaces et Fonctionnalité des Couches Minces (Interface Structure and Functionality of Thin Film), two laboratories used to working together on a number of projects. This merger will enable both teams to extend their research and will confer the new laboratory with increased exposure on the national, and even international scene. With a permanent staff of 75, including 50 researchers, the laboratory has instantly become a key player within Caen’s research hub.
Two major research themes have been defined focusing on ion interactions with matter and electronics / photonics. “These research themes rely on previous work. The aim is not to revolutionise previous successes, but rather to create new synergies and to pool together techniques,” explains Serge Bouffard, the new structure’s Director.
The mission to serve as a host laboratory for interdisciplinary research using beams from GANIL, and for higher education via Caen University and ENSICAEN, will be pursued by the CIMAP. This fundamental research laboratory will also be working with local businesses and major groups.

1 joint research unit reuniting the CEA, the CNRS, ENSICAEN and Caen University.
