30 years of neonatal screening
7 05 2009The 30th anniversary of neonatal tests in Normandy was celebrated on the 10th of April 2009.
Back in 1979, the CHU in Caen was a pioneer in systematic cystic fibrosis screening in newborn babies, thanks to a partnership between Professor Duhamel’s paediatrics department and the biologist, Georges Travert (photo), who developed a technique for measuring “trypsin” levels. Since 2003, screening for this genetic disease has been extended to all maternities throughout France. Professor Travert, president of the ANDPHE – Normandy Association for Screening and Prevention of Child Handicaps, took advantage of this anniversary to present a new research programme. Thanks to a new technology: “tandem mass spectrometry”, the simultaneous screening of two genetic metabolic anomalies is now possible.
